Police stopped traffic on the busy Deegan Expressway in the Bronx on Friday, May 15, 2009, as a Shepherd-mix dog valiantly protected a yellow Labrador that had been hit by a car. The Shepherd ran in and out of traffic, barking at cars. He would not let the police approach his companion. After a while, the officers were able to maneuver the Shepherd onto an off-ramp and render aid to the injured animal.
The Lab was taken to a veterinary clinic and treated for a broken leg. Neither animal had identification tags, but the owner of both dogs saw the events unfolding on television. She went to Animal Control and picked up the dogs, then took the Lab to get further medical treatment. The Shepherd-mix is the son of the injured Lab.
