It’s every pet haiku judge’s nightmare: I inadvertently selected a poem as one of the three runners up that has been circulating through cyberspace for years. (At least as far back as 2001, based on my Internet searches. My only consolation is knowing that I’m not the only one who liked it…) Eep!…

It’s safe to say that this pet-haikuing thing really struck a chord. Perhaps it’s because these poems are the perfect bite-sized container for creativity. Or because there’s a certain unexplainable satisfaction that comes with telling a story in just 17 syllables.

I used to pronounce “Weimaraner” as “WHY-mer-omer.” It’s one of those words that makes me feel like I have marbles in my mouth, and, embarrassingly, it wasn’t until my good friends Jen and Dave got their pooch Salvador (“Sal”) that I learned to say (and spell) it correctly: “VI-mer-ron-er.”

Man’s best friend is being sent to jail as part of a program to help disabled soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. And for both the pups and the incarcerated men and women who train them, there couldn’t be a better place for these dogs to grow up.
